Am I guaranteed a position in an international school?
Jobs are not guaranteed. Much of your success will depend on how many vacancies are open in your teaching subject(s) in that given recruitment cycle, your experience in the teaching subject(s) for which you are applying, teaching credentials/certification, total number of teaching or leadership experience, how proactive you are in your job search to include attending a job fair, how well you interview, how flexible and open you are to all geographic locations, the strength of your file, etc. What we can say is that you have a better chance of securing a job through Search Associates. All of our member schools are thoroughly vetted, you have direct access to thousands of vacancies posted by our member schools, access to the best job fairs in the international community, a Senior Associate who is available to guide you, if needed, and much more.
Can I choose the overseas destination I will go to?
As a candidate you are completely in control of which schools you apply to. Interviews and offers may come from schools in unexpected countries, and you may not get interviews in your country of choice. Your Associate will be available for advice and counsel throughout the entire process. We always encourage candidates to be open to all areas of the world in order to increase their chances of getting at least one good job offer.
Do you search for a position for me and put me into contact with schools?
Once your profile is active, the power is in your hands! You’ll have access to our extensive database to search for openings and contact schools directly. Plus, you’ll receive daily email alerts for new positions that match your preferences, so you’ll be the first to know when opportunities arise. As you explore schools and positions that interest you, your Associate and their team are always here to support you and answer any questions. At the same time, recruiters will be actively searching the database for candidates like you—so don’t be surprised if they reach out to you directly to discuss potential opportunities!
Does Search Associates assign me to a specific school?
Search Associates does NOT assign candidates to schools. Our purpose is to connect candidates and international schools through an online database, job fairs and the collective and individual contacts of our Senior Associates. As a candidate, your profile will be available to schools searching to fill a position(s), and similarly you as a candidate will be able to view a school profile, search for vacancies and contact schools. Candidates and recruiters also connect at our job fairs. However, all job offers depend on the strength of your file, your confidential references, your ability to interview, and your flexibility as to the type of school and location you find attractive.
Does Search Associates help candidates looking for Counseling positions?
Yes! There is always a need for outstanding counselors with primary or secondary school experience. Typically, an international school will have one counselor per division: elementary, middle and high school. A larger school may well have more than one counselor, particularly at the high School level. In this case, a school may well require experience in college counseling in addition to academic and personal counseling.
In some countries, schools will hire school psychologists. If you are a school psychologist with good experience, and would feel comfortable in the counseling role, you should definitely consider applying.
Does Search Associates help Language-School Teachers?
Not in general. Although a few English language schools are starting to join Search Associates, we work almost entirely with 'mainstream' international schools which have English as their main language of instruction (for example, those schools serving children in the age range of 3-19 and teaching those subjects usually found in schools in the developed English-speaking countries). Most international schools do have some ESL/EFL specialist teachers, but candidates for these positions normally have prior teaching experience in similar 'mainstream' schools, whether home-country or international.
I am moving to one specific country (or one city or targeting one school) and cannot be available for a range of opportunities in varied locations. Can you help me find a position there?
If you are targeting one school, one city, or one country (with very few schools), you might try your luck in contacting them directly before applying with Search Associates. However, a benefit of registering with us is that you won’t have to ask your referees to submit letters of reference to more than one school (as they will be in our database), and you will probably save yourself time as well. Also, if the school is a member of Search Associates, your file is likely to rise to the top of hundreds of random emails the school receives from candidates because your file will be readily accessible through Search Associates and we are well respected in the international education community. That being said, it will be extremely difficult to find a position with such a narrow search and most Associates will encourage you to be more flexible.
I just want to be placed in "X" country in Europe -- what are my odds?
While over 100 schools in Europe are registered with us, they represent only 15% of our total member schools. Many teachers considering working abroad think first of Europe, so the positions are very competitive. There is also difficulty for non-EU (European Union) citizens to obtain visas/work permits. Therefore, we encourage you to keep yourself open to other areas of the world in order to increase your chances of securing a position abroad. Unless there are truly compelling reasons for a self-imposed geographic restriction, it is unlikely that Search Associates will accept a candidate with a "one-country," or even a "one-region," restriction.
My spouse/partner and I want to teach overseas together. How does that work?
We strongly encourage teaching couples to apply with Search Associates as schools generally prefer to hire couples (although some factors such as number of dependent children, teaching preferences and flexibility may affect a teaching couples ability to be competitive.) Both members of the teaching couple would be required to complete a separate application with Search Associates as well as our pre-screening requirements. In other words, we would require each part of the "team" to have a complete and separate profile with Search Associates prior to being accepted as candidates. Once accepted, both profiles will be electronically "linked" together by our system so that recruiters viewing the profile of either half of the couple will have direct and immediate access to the other person.
(Please Note: By Search Associates Policy, teaching couples are only Activated as a couple, when both files are completed. One half of a teaching couple is not Activated until the other half of the couple has also completed his or her file.)
Once I am registered, how does an employer receive and review my information?
Schools can search the database for candidates and their profiles, which include the information contained in the online application, the biographical notes, and the confidential references.
Candidates who contact schools should always identify themselves as Search candidates, so that schools can then view their profiles in the Search Associates database. Candidates should also contact any schools listing openings of interest, and always keep the Associate in the loop about developments.
Where is the main office of Search Associates?
Founded in 1990 by longtime international educator John Magagna, Search Associates is a family-owned organization, now led by his daughter, CEO Jessica Magagna. Over the years, we’ve grown into a network of numerous offices located around the world, managed by Senior Associates who work directly with candidates and, in many cases, run job fairs. Our Associates may be based wherever they happen to be with a laptop, but they work closely as a global team, ensuring seamless support for candidates and schools alike.

Who has a better chance of getting a job, a Science or an English teacher?
Each recruitment cycle is unique and depends on the specific needs of our member schools at that time. However, generally speaking, teachers in specialist fields tend to be more competitive because there are fewer candidates in the pool for those roles. Areas such as music, art, library, early childhood, science, mathematics, and advanced-level subjects (like IB Diploma, AP, or GCE A-Level) typically see a higher demand. While there are more candidates in fields like English and ESL, schools are always on the lookout for exceptional teachers in every subject. So regardless of your specialization, a strong profile and dedication will make you competitive in the job search.
How do I become a fully registered candidate with Search Associates?
To become a member of Search Associates, you’ll need to complete the pre-screening steps before we activate your account and invite you to a job fair. Here’s how it works:
1. Submit Your Application: Start by filling out your online application. Once completed thoroughly, your Associate will review it and reach out with next steps.
2. Agree to Candidate Terms: During the application process, you’ll read and sign our agreement with candidates, which will also be accessible on your dashboard.
3. Complete Confidential Questions: These questions, visible only to your Associate, help us understand your background better. They’re available on your candidate dashboard as soon as you create an account.
4. Review School Commitments: Before joining, you’ll review and agree to your responsibilities to any school where you accept an offer.
5. Submit Confidential References: We require at least four confidential references, which you, as the candidate, will request and manage directly. Full instructions are available on your dashboard, and your Associate will support you throughout the process. Please note, Search Associates will only reach out to your referees if there is a significant concern or if a reference has been submitted incorrectly. Once your account is activated, these references will be visible to member schools reviewing your profile, and they may contact referees directly if they are highly interested in extending an offer.

6. Pay Membership Fee: Your registration fee, paid directly to your Associate, activates your profile. You’ll only need to pay once we confirm your acceptance as a Search Associates candidate (UK Office and Intern Candidates excepted).
The application process can be completed quickly if all information is accurate and your referees submit references promptly. Each step moves you closer to becoming an member candidate and accessing our extensive network of international teaching opportunities!
Do I have to pay my registration fee before I can be considered for membership with Search Associates?
No, Search Associates will not ask for any registration fee until you’ve been officially notified of your acceptance as a member candidate. We believe in ensuring we can genuinely assist you before accepting any payment. Once accepted, you’ll need to submit your registration fee to activate your account and begin your job search.
Once I complete all of the pre-screening requirements, am I guaranteed acceptance as a Search Associates candidate?
Completion of our pre-screening requirements does not guarantee acceptance as a candidate. Acceptance depends on several factors, including your teaching preferences, flexibility, certifications, educational background, strength of confidential references, number of dependents, and more. Once your Senior Associate has thoroughly reviewed your complete file, they will notify you as soon as possible regarding your candidacy.
What if my original Associate is no longer affiliated with the organization?
If your original Associate is no longer with Search Associates, you should register with the Senior Associate working in the area in which you currently reside. If there is no Associate assigned to your geographical area, you can choose the Associate who organizes the fair you wish to attend. However, before completing a new online application form, you should first try to access your previous account by clicking on "retrieve username/password" found on the login section on the home page, and follow the instructions from there.
Do I need to have a completed, and recent, criminal background check in order to apply with Search Associates?
Search Associates is committed to ensuring that candidates registered with us have been thoroughly evaluated. Not just evaluated for quality of teaching, but for backgrounds clear of actual or suspicious misbehavior around children as well. Although we are not requiring candidates to provide copies of their background checks we are STRONGLY encouraging candidates to upload these documents to their Search Associates candidate file. Although not all international schools will require a background check, many will have this as a requirement for employment. Therefore, candidates providing this information will be MORE competitive in their job search.
How long will it take for me to become a registered candidate?
Much of this will depend on how long it takes you to complete the application (some candidates complete it all at once and others take days or even weeks.) It will also depend on how quickly your referees complete the online confidential references. The application can be completed at your leisure as you can save changes at any time and go back and continue your work. If you choose to complete the application all at once, it should not take more than 30 minutes as long as you have all of the information you need readily available. The longest part of the process is waiting for your referees to complete the online confidential references. Some referees complete the forms quickly, but others take much longer. On average, it may take a few weeks but can certainly be done sooner. If you are interested in attending one of the earlier job fairs, we encourage you to start the process well before the start date of the fair.
How much contact will I have with my Associate?
As much or as little contact as you need. Many candidates feel comfortable with the electronic registration process and use our database independently to connect with schools and secure jobs. However, others prefer more frequent communication with their Senior Associate and support team, whether by email, phone, or sometimes in person. We’re here to support you every step of the way and are just an email or phone call away. Our goal is to respond within two business days, and often even sooner. Rest assured, we are committed to being accessible wherever we are.
If I registered with Search Associates many years ago, why do I have to register again with the same Associate?
Registering with the original Associate is the standard company practice. Your original Associate has your paper file and might have established a professional relationship with you. However, our priority is to provide quality service. Should you have compelling reasons to switch to another Associate, please discuss this with your original Associate, who can transfer your file if everyone is in agreement.
Once I have registered, how long can I remain on the active list?
Your membership period with Search Associates is one year from the date of activation or until you find a job (whether through SA or not), whichever comes first. For candidates needing a little extra time, you can seamlessly sign up for a second year with little to no hassle. Please note that once a registration fee has been submitted and your account is activated, no refunds can be issued. Membership cannot be 'paused' or extended, even if you decide to temporarily step away from your job search. We assume that candidates signing up for membership are fully engaged and actively pursuing a job abroad. We encourage you to take full advantage of your membership period to actively use our platform and explore job opportunities.
What documents do I need to submit in order to apply with Search Associates?
In addition to copies of your criminal background check (see question about criminal background checks above), we strongly encourage candidates to upload copies of their teaching credentials as well as copies of their college/university transcripts completed within the last five years. More information will be provided by your Senior Associate during the application process.
What is the best timing for the job search process?
Vacancies in international schools can arise throughout the year, so it's possible to secure a position at any time. However, most international schools begin their recruitment process a full year before the academic year starts. To maximize your opportunities and apply for the greatest number of suitable positions, we recommend following this timeline:
June - August: Complete your application and gain acceptance as a member candidate one year before you plan to begin employment at an international school.
September: Familiarize yourself with the Search Associates database and start receiving email notifications for job openings. Contact your Associate to request an invitation to one of our exclusive job fairs (by invitation only).
October: Make sure your CV/résumé is professional looking and current. If attending a job fair, bring printed copies. While an online portfolio is optional, many candidates now include links to portfolios in their communication with schools, which can help you stand out if you have the time and skills to create one.
November: Continue reaching out to schools of interest. Based on your Associate’s advice, prepare to attend a job fair that suits your profile. Keep communicating with schools to stay on their radar.
Ongoing: The job search is a process that may take several months. It’s important to stay patient and flexible—success will come with persistence, and you’ll find the right position for you.
Will I become a fully registered candidate when I complete the online application?
No, the online application is just the first step. You need to have at least four online references submitted to us confidentially by your chosen referees. You will also need to agree to and submit the Search Associates agreement, and send in our database user/registration fee (Exception: UK Office and Intern Candidates). You will receive detailed instructions from your personal Associate once your online application has been successfully submitted. Please look at "How do I become a fully-registered candidate with Search Associates" for more detailed information about the registration process.
With which specific Associate should I register?
When you begin your journey with Search Associates through our 'Get Started' process, you'll be asked to identify your current location and, if applicable, your job fair interests. Based on your responses, you will be assigned to a Senior Associate who manages that specific territory. We are unique in having 20 offices worldwide, with each Associate managing defined regions. This approach allows us to provide personalized, one-on-one support rather than relying on a phone bank to answer inquiries from thousands of candidates.
Our Senior Associates are not only deeply knowledgeable about all of our 750+ member schools, but they’ve also been international educators themselves. Their extensive experience means they can assist any candidate, no matter where you're looking to teach or what level of experience you have.
Do Head of School/Superintendent candidates have to register with Search Associates?
Head of school candidates may register with Search Associates. However, if you are only looking for a head of school position, it is not necessary to become a registered active candidate. We would encourage you to view head of schools openings on the Leadership Vacancies page of our web site. These positions are open to all candidates whether fully registered with Search Associates or not. Click on the school, and you can view details about the position and the application procedure.
It is important to know that administrative positions are very competitive, in particular, head of school positions. In addition, many job openings have early deadlines ranging from October-December, so it is important to begin your search as early as possible.
Do Principal / Leadership position candidates have to register with Search Associates?
Jobs are posted on the Leadership Vacancies section of our website that are open to both registered and non-registered administrators, as are head of school searches. Please click on the particular school for details about the opening and the application procedure.
Additional administrative postings that are available only to candidates who are fully registered and active in our database are also available. Prospective candidates wishing to attend one of our job fairs need to be fully registered in order to receive an invitation.
It is important to know that administrative positions are very competitive. Many job openings often have early deadlines ranging from October-December, so it is vital to begin your search as early as possible.
Is there a fee to become a Search candidate?
Candidates new to Search Associates can enjoy a one year membership for $100.00 which includes free attendance at one of our premier job fairs. There is the option to sign-on for a second year at a reduced rate of $75.00 if more time is needed for a job search. Returning candidates, who were once members, can re-register and enjoy a one year membership for $75.00 which also includes one free fair attendance. There is also an option to sign-up for an additional year, if needed. (Exceptions: UK offices and Interns). Candidate membership ends once a job is accepted at an international school, whether through Search or other means, or once the year membership concludes, whichever comes first. Once payment is submitted for membership, and the account active, no refunds are available.
Can you take Pay Pal or an alternative credit card payment for candidate fees?
With the exception of our UK-based office, candidate fees are payable directly to your Associate's office. Each Associate will accept payment in various ways so you should check with their office to see how they will accept payments. NOTE: Search Associates does not accept or invoice for our registration fee until after the candidate has completed all steps of our pre-screening requirements and has been accepted as a Search member candidate. We do not feel comfortable accepting any fees from candidates until we are sure we can help them!
Do I have to pay a fee when I accept a job offer at a school?
No. Any recruitment fee is always paid by the school hiring you.
How does the membership cost work for teaching couples?
The same vetting process and support are specific to each candidate, even as part of a teaching couple. Each candidate must submit an application individually, create their login credentials, and will have an individualized dashboard. Therefore, each candidate pays a membership fee to have their profile reviewed and activated on the Search Associates database.
Search Associates screens each applicant on their own "merit" and together as a teaching couple. So, for example, it may be that one candidate meets our membership requirements, but the other one doesn't. Therefore, it is essential first to vet each candidate separately. However, once both applications are complete and all pre-screening requirements are submitted, your Associate will review both files. Then, if we can accept both applications, we will "link" the files together so school recruiters can see the candidates are a teaching couple. They can also go from one candidate profile to the other easily through our linking process.
Is the registration fee refundable once I am an active member?
A membership period is one year from the time a candidate becomes active and ends when an international job is secured (by us or other means), or when the one year concludes, whichever comes first. We encourage candidate members to engage actively with our platform to make the most of their membership benefits. Because our resources are designed for those actively seeking positions, the one-year membership fee is non-refundable after activation, even if your plans or timeline change. This policy helps ensure consistent access and support for all our candidates.
Is the registration fee refunded if you do not accept me as a candidate?
Search Associates will not invoice a candidate or request a payment prior to accepting them as a Search Associates member candidate. However, if you inadvertently sent your Associate a payment, and are not accepted, your registration fee will be fully refunded!
What if I accept an offer, but then later decide not to go?
It is very important to accept an offer only if and when you are 100% committed. Once you verbally accept a position (whether you have signed the actual contract or not), you are firmly committed to your agreement to take the job. Schools are not able to replace teachers easily when candidates back out of their commitments. They have passed on other quality candidates, and with each week of a recruiting season, the candidate pool dwindles. Search Associates has very strong policies regarding a candidate who reneges on a contract (please read the Search Associates Agreement carefully on this issue).
What qualifications are necessary?
International schools vary in their requirements, and the country in which a school is located may have specific requirements to establish eligibility for a work-visa and approval by the relevant government ministry. It is essential for a candidate to have at least a B.A., a B.Sc., or B.Ed. degree, and current teaching certification/qualification. This would be defined as a license issued by a governing body giving authority to teach in a specific country/province/state. Due to visa restrictions or requirements, some schools may only be able to obtain a visa for candidates holding a passport from the UK, USA, New Zealand, Canada or Australia. Information about a member schools visa requirements can be found on each school profile for a candidate to review.
Degree qualifications and at least two years (sometimes more) of full-time teaching experience in a suitable 'mainstream' school (primary/elementary and/or secondary) are often quoted as minimum requirements. Some schools will accept newly qualified candidates as well as interns. A Master's degree is valued for teachers and administrators, and some schools look favorably at doctorates for Head of School positions. Intern candidates normally have none of the foregoing qualifications, except that they are usually about to earn a Bachelor's degree before starting their internship.
Does Search Associates help non-teachers?
Not in general. We do offer assistance to intern candidates, administrators (senior management), as well as other non-teaching members of a school's academic staff, such as librarians and counselors. Sometimes we are able to help a school-experienced business manager find a new international-school position, and spouses of our registered candidates have found positions such as laboratory technician, teacher assistant, or school secretary/PA. Only qualified teachers, administrators, and recent graduates seeking intern roles can register as Search Associates candidates.
I don't have a teaching qualification but have started the process of getting one. Should I wait until I have that secured before I apply?
Due in part to host country VISA restrictions, about 60% of the schools currently registered with us require a recognized teaching certification/qualification that authorizes you to teach in government primary and/or secondary schools in your home country. You may be able to secure employment with these schools contingent upon getting a recognized qualification before your employment starts, or shortly after your employment begins. If you have successful classroom teaching experience and can show that you are definitely enrolled in a course leading to a recognized qualification, this will help your chance of employment.
I only know English. Do I need to know the language of the country?
No, English is the main language of instruction, but most people who travel overseas enjoy taking language courses so that they can feel more comfortable moving around independently. Some schools with a large population of host country national students may give preference to candidates who have a working knowledge of the language.
Is prior overseas experience required for teachers or administrators?
International experience can be a preferred qualification for some schools, but is not necessary to be a competitive candidate.
Do I need a criminal background check to teach in an international school?
Yes. The chances are very high that the school where you are hired and/or the host government will require a criminal background check from your country of passport AND a police record check from the country where you are currently teaching (if different from country of passport). You should proceed with obtaining these checks as you prepare your Search application and upload the checks on your Search profile as soon as you receive them. The vast majority of schools currently working with Search Associates require these checks because it is a recommendation from the International Task Force on Child Protection which is now being incorporated into international school accreditation agencies' standards and indicators. Host governments increasingly require these checks to issue visas and work permits to any foreign hire professional wishing to work in their country.
Are there any age restrictions?
Search Associates does not discriminate based on age, but candidates should be aware that schools in other countries may have age restrictions because of host country regulations governing work visas. Age limits might begin between 55 and 65 for some countries; however, many others impose no age limits at all. Each school profile will have age restrictions listed as applicable.
Dependents: I have a non-teaching partner and children. What are my chances of securing a job?
Schools have their "pick" from a large candidate pool. Teaching couples with few or no dependents and single candidates with no dependents tend to have a better chance of securing jobs than a teacher with a non-teaching partner (with or without dependents). The reality is that it is more challenging to secure a job with a non-teaching partner, and even more challenging if you have a non-teaching spouse and dependents. Search Associates has observed, however, that more and more schools today focus on quality, aiming foremost to get the best possible teacher.
How many jobs are available in my field?
The answer to this question depends greatly on the hiring needs of our member schools during a particular recruiting season. The number of jobs also varies according to the time of year and the field in question. For example, few jobs are available as business managers or in human resources because schools can usually find personnel for these departments in the host city/country. The number of jobs in each field is generally like a bell curve, low in September and October, building to a peak in December, January, February and March, and then tapering back down during the spring and summer.
I want to go overseas only for a year. Is this possible?
The typical contract for teachers is two years. Intern contracts are usually for one year. The school's investment is high, both in financial expense and time, in bringing a teacher overseas. Schools need professional staff who are fully focused on the school and the students. A two-year commitment is reasonable and goes by quickly. Occasionally, a school might be willing to sign a teacher for a year or less (for example, if the teacher is finishing the year for another teacher); however, two years is the norm.
Do I have to pay extra to attend a job fair?
No. Your Search Associates membership includes free attendance to one of our job fairs in the registration fee per year. If you wish to attend additional fairs, there is a $75.00 fee for an in-person fair. (
Exceptions: UK offices and Interns.) Travel and accommodation costs are always the responsibility of the candidate attending.
How do I know which fair it is best to attend?
Each of our job fairs is unique, so some are better suited for certain types of candidates than others. Your Associate can help you to choose the right fair(s) to match your profile and your own personal career plans.
How do I register for a job fair?
Attendance at a fair is by invitation only. Once you are an active candidate, you qualify to receive an invitation to one of our fairs. Visit our "job fairs" to review the schedule for the upcoming recruiting season. You must always request an invitation to a fair from your Associate, either from your candidate dashboard or by contacting your Associate directly. Fairs have limited space and fill up quickly, so we encourage you to start the registration process to become an active candidate as early as possible, and well in advance of the date of the fair you wish to attend.
I am only interested in Western Europe and would like to attend the job fair to check things out.
Search Associates needs to satisfy the needs of both the candidates and the schools. Unless a candidate is legitimate, meaning they are well-qualified and flexible regarding location, it is not in anyone’s best interest to take a space at a fair and deny one to another qualified candidate willing to go almost anywhere. It’s best to be open and flexible to the many hundreds of gems of schools located around the world.
I get the impression that decisions to accept or decline offers need to be made the weekend of the job fair. Is this true or do recruiters contact teachers later?
Do not accept a job offer unless you want it and are committed to going. Search Associates and the school will hold you to your word. In some cases, a decision might have to be made during the fair. However, if any school pressures you to sign immediately, and you do not feel quite right about it, you should request a couple of days to think it over. Some recruiters know that the best strategy is to give candidates time to carefully consider the offer, and they do not pressure the candidate at all. On the other hand, recruiters need to set deadlines. They cannot afford to lose a different candidate if you delay too long. Candidates are carefully advised about this issue at the start of the fair and Associates will be on hand during the fair to support you.
I'm not sure I really am ready to go overseas next year, but I want to go to a job fair for the experience.
What we do NOT want are "window shoppers" at our job fairs. If you are not truly committed to finding a position overseas for the next school year, you should not attend the fair.
Once I am fully registered and active, am I guaranteed to receive an invitation to the job fair I wish to attend?
Although Search Associates will do our best to extend you an invitation to your job fair of choice, we cannot guarantee that this will happen. For example, early fairs attract highly experienced teaching couples and singles without dependents. An inexperienced teacher in a subject with an abundance of teachers (for example English, Social Studies, ESL) who has a non-teaching partner and a child would most likely have a difficult time even getting an interview, and would have a better chance of securing a job at a later fair. In addition, some fairs might be overbooked or already have too many candidates in your subject area. In the best interest of the candidate, the Associate will always recommend a fair in which the candidate has a better chance of securing an interview.
Should I go to a job fair?
We understand that attending a job fair is an investment, and we don't take that lightly. That said, attending a job fair is always recommended! Although many of our candidates find a job through the connections they make via our robust database, there is no replicating the advantage of meeting with school recruiters face to face. For those new to international teaching, attending a job fair provides more insight into the international school community and you will be surrounded by amazing like-minded educators. Additionally, you will have a higher chance of securing an interview at a job fair because you will be making that request directly to the school recruiter, in-person. We see a job fair as an added tool in your job search! Although you can find a job without attending a fair, your decision to attend will definitely increase the odds of getting an interview, which is the first step to securing a job.
Please note that not all job fairs are suited for all candidates. Your assigned Senior Associate, or a member of his or her team, can help guide you to the fair where you will have the highest chance of success.
What if I don't want to attend a job fair?
Not a problem, although most past candidates will tell you that fair attendance helps greatly. It is entirely a candidate's own choice. About 40% of jobs are secured without attending a fair. Search-registered candidates find their access to the interactive Search Associates database invaluable.
What is the percentage of candidates attending a job fair who are hired as a result?
This varies from fair to fair. The range is between about 30% and 60%. However, these percentages can be misleading. Subject and grade level greatly affect a candidate's chances. For example, a high percentage of physics or mathematics teachers might be placed (low number of candidates, large number of jobs), but English or ESL teachers tend to be more numerous so their placement rate could be lower, with only those who interview extremely well getting hired quickly. Teaching couples and singles without dependents tend to have a higher rate of placement than other candidates. Candidates limiting their search to one geographical area only reduce their chances significantly.
What are the qualifications of an intern?
The intern position is intended for young people who are recent college graduates/new teachers. Many schools hiring interns don’t require candidates to have a teaching credential or teaching experience, but they do want to see evidence of experience and enthusiasm in working with youth. Applicants with student teaching experience and a credential usually have a good chance of hire.
What does an intern do?
Job descriptions depend on the individual school, and on the talents and interests of the individual intern. Some serve as teacher assistants, while others may have full responsibility for a classroom. Some interns substitute in a variety of classes, and others will work exclusively with a mentor teacher. Interns usually also assist with clubs and sports and other co-curricular activities, and are encouraged to contribute to the school community in general.
What does the intern contract entail?
The intern contract is generally for a single year, while teaching contracts are traditionally for two. Interns earn around half the salary of full-fledged teachers, but because housing, airfare and insurance are provided, it can be possible to put aside some money from the monthly earnings (which vary by school). Most schools provide housing (usually shared), but some may give an allowance instead.
Is there an application/activation fee for interns?
There is no fee for intern candidates.

Intern candidates may have teaching certification/qualifications and some teaching experience, but are not required to do so. Which schools offer internships?
Not all our member schools offer internships, but many do in many parts of the world. Interns are currently working in Germany, Jordan and Japan, to name a few!
Can an intern candidate attend any hiring fair?
Schools recruiting interns usually expect to interview candidates personally at the Search job fair in Cambridge, MA. in late January. It can sometimes be possible to get an offer at another fair, or out-of-fair altogether, but attendance at the Cambridge Fair is recommended since most intern positions are filled there.
Does an internship lead to a full-fledged teaching job?
Schools often do hire interns as teachers the following year, but it is wise to seek a teaching credential if a career in education is of long-term interest.
Can I apply with a partner?
Schools employing interns will sometimes hire an intern ‘teaching couple,’ but the chances of hire are stronger as a single candidate.
Preferred general characteristics of a competitive administrative candidate
Bachelor's degree, teaching diploma, or recognized equivalent from a reputable college or university
Few, if any, schools will hire administrators unless they have completed a BA or BS degree or its equivalent.
A minimum of two years experience in an educational leadership position appropriate to your field of application
Most school recruiters are looking for administrators who are currently doing what they will be expected to do overseas. Administrative positions are extremely competitive. The more administrative experience you have in the area you are seeking, the more competitive you will be.
Flexibility
Candidates who are willing only to go to Europe, for example, greatly diminish their chances of securing a position. Candidates willing to go almost anywhere greatly improve their chances of securing a position.
If you do not meet all or some of these qualifications, we discourage you from applying as we think it will be difficult for you to secure an administrative position.
Preferred general characteristics of a competitive intern candidate
College or university senior or very recent graduate.
Intern positions are available for graduating seniors and recent college graduates who wish to spend an academic year working in an international school. Intern candidates may have teaching certification/qualifications and some teaching experience, one year or less, but most successful interns do not have such a background. Internships are paid positions (lower salaries than teachers) and usually have the same benefits given to teaching candidates, such as health insurance, round trip airfare and more.
Strong academic record. In U.S. terms, a grade point average of at least 3.2 or higher, is preferred.
Experience working with children.
This could be through camp counseling, tutoring, teaching assistant and so forth. Although this is not mandatory, it will enhance your competitiveness.

Most school recruiters are looking for teachers or administrators who are currently doing what they will be expected to do overseas. Some schools may waive (or possibly waive) the experience component, particularly in scarce subject areas, so long as the applicant has completed student teaching and is credentialed. Still, the more experienced a candidate is, the more competitive they will be.
Teaching certification/credential or qualification preferably from an English speaking country.
Approximately 80% of schools we work with state they will not hire a candidate without a teaching credential. Much of this is the result of host country restrictions in obtaining a VISA/working permit. While not all schools require a valid teaching credential, many do; thus, having a teaching credential will enhance your competitiveness.

Additional factors which could hinder your ability to be a competitive candidate
Family Status
Almost all schools will hire teaching couples and single teachers without dependents. However, international schools incur exceptional expenses, such as airfares, shipping, relocation and, in most cases, housing provisions, when hiring personnel from abroad; therefore, the more dependents a teacher has, the more expensive the teacher becomes.
Generally, teaching couples with more than two dependents will find significantly fewer options, and beyond that, the odds of success diminish rapidly. Single teachers with a dependent child will find that budget considerations may make it more difficult to obtain an offer from most schools. Therefore, you may find that schools which interest you greatly will not consider your candidacy. Teaching candidates who have a "non-teaching spouse" and no dependents should be relatively competitive in most parts of the world. However, there are some schools which will not hire this category of teacher. If you have a "non-teaching spouse" and one or more dependents, your job search will be very challenging, and you may find fewer options available to you.
Age restrictions
Search Associates does not discriminate based on age. However, we work with schools in almost 140 countries, and each country has its own laws and regulations concerning residence visas and work permits. As best we can determine, around 30% of the countries do not impose an age limit for issuing visas/work permits. Among those countries that do impose restrictions, the age is generally 65. The most common location for age limits is in the Arabian Gulf, where the restriction is 59 years of age. Once you have access to our database, you can easily see each school profile and determine whether or not schools have an age restriction based on the countries in which they are located.
